Technical standards
There will always be a need to adjust formatting at the final production stage.
To make this step trouble-free, your manuscript must conform to our electronic quality standards,
but, equally important, if adopted early they will reduce your own editing overheads.
general
- a single electronic document saved in MS Word format
- A4 portrait page layout
- language set to UK English
- layout and headings set by paragraph styles, not by formatting individual paragraphs
- no page or section breaks
- empty header and footer including no page numbers (we will add a footer with a page number)
- no blank paragraphs (no empty lines)
- no additional spaces or tabs to control layout
- single spaces at the end of sentences and between words
- smart quotes, used consistently
- consistent use of continuation characters, eg ...
- never more than three consecutive periods... with or without spaces
- consistent layout
- no full stops in acronyms eg CD, not e.g. C.D.
styles
Formatting applied other than with styles is likely to be lost
- 'normal' style for most text, indented, justified, colour automatic
- font of all other styles dependent on 'normal', thus a single font in the document
- 'normal first' for the first paragraph of each chapter/section, not indented
- 'normal poetry' for paragraphs with no spacing between lines, not indented
- 'heading 2' for chapter headings, used to create page breaks and contents
- 'heading 3' for sub-headings only if these are to be included in the contents
- if you use additional paragraph or text styles, provide us with the details
Templates are available on request for Word and OpenOffice supporting these standards
